Iowa Legal Aid Health and Law Project/Des Moines office
Working in cooperation with Primary Health Care, the Iowa Legal Aid Health and Law Project provides legal assistance to low-income people with legal problems impacting their health. Addressing underlying legal problems can help reduce health care costs and improve the patient's quality of life.
The Health and Law Project provides information, counseling and representation with legal problems experienced by people facing health care issues.
Health problems can be linked to legal issues, such as a person with disability who applies for Social Security Disability or Veterans benefits. Services we provide include:
- Advice on Medicaid, Medicare, health care directives, insurance and other health care issues;
- Helping obtain Social Security, SSI, VA benefits, food stamps and other income maintenance programs;
- Helping with appeals if your decision is denied;
- Representation with evictions from nursing homes, county care facilities or hospitals;
- Helping people who live in substandard housing; and
- Helping victims of domestic violence obtain protection through the court system.
