Volunteer Opportunities: Iowa Legal Aid is a nonprofit organization that provides free legal assistance in civil (non-criminal) cases to low-income Iowans in all 99 counties. Help is provided to domestic abuse survivors, people with disabilities, seniors, veterans, and other vulnerable populations. Iowa Legal Aid has ten regional offices located across the state and a Legal Hotline for Older Iowans. Funding is received from federal, state and local government sources, numerous United Way organizations, bar associations, corporations, foundations, community foundations, law firms and individual attorneys and donors.

Unpaid internship and volunteer opportunities are available in most regional offices. Duties include answering phones, initial screening of applicants for service, filing and copying documents, working on special projects, and providing assistance to attorneys as needed (including investigation and in-depth interviews depending on students' interests and abilities). Good experience for students considering law school, students majoring in social work, political science, and women's studies. Students with bi-lingual verbal and written communications skills are highly encouraged to apply. To find out about office locations and contact information please call 1-800-532-1275 or visit the Iowa Legal Aid website Directory and enter the name of your county for the regional office serving your area.
