Farmworker Rights Project

Iowa Legal Aid is hiring a paid legal intern for our Farmworker Rights Project. The position is full-time during the summer with possible part-time hours during the spring and fall semesters.

The Farmworker Rights Project provides education and legal assistance to farmworkers who work in a variety of agricultural jobs. Farmworkers face many legal problems related to their status as agricultural workers. These include issues related to employment, wages, health and safety, housing, education, domestic abuse, harassment, public benefits, immigration and language access. Iowa Legal Aid strives to help eligible farmworkers to resolve these issues either informally or through formal legal processes.

The person hired for this position will perform outreach to educate farmworkers about their rights and to interview potential clients. The intern will also work with staff attorneys on casework, including interviewing clients and witnesses, drafting demand letters, drafting discovery requests and preparing for trial.

The ability to speak fluent Spanish is required for this position.  Internships may be available in Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Dubuque, Iowa City, Mason City, Ottumwa, Sioux City or Waterloo.  Preference will be given to 2L students. Law student interns will be paid $20.00/hour, plus mileage for travel.
