Iowa Legal Aid has a new collaboration with the in-house attorneys and non-attorney staff at Athene. Iowa Legal Aid has trained Athene volunteers to advise prospective nonprofit organizations. Athene will hold a clinic on July 13th from 9 a.m. to noon to provide consultations over the phone. As always, our services are free. We hope this collaboration will help us serve more people!
If you would like a legal consultation through this clinic, please fill out the retainer linked above and send it back to me ASAP and sign up for a time to schedule your call here. We cannot perform your intake without this form and we may need others completed, too. If you are not a U.S. citizen, do not fill out that part of the form and we can follow-up with other information needed.
Organizations that serve the same client population as Iowa Legal Aid should also fill out the POMS 12-2 Form for ILA internal compliance purposes (see above to download).
If you are working with someone(s) else, we will need a retainer signed from each person, even if you are calling about the same nonprofit. If you want Iowa Legal Aid’s help completing the paperwork needed to start a nonprofit (e.g., articles of incorporation, bylaws, the Form 1023), this consultation is the first step in that process. You will be told how to apply for these further services from ILA during your consultation.
Our volunteers are excited to help you begin the journey of forming a nonprofit organization! If you have any questions, contact Samantha Wagner via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also call 515-243-1193.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Will the appointment take the full three hours?
No! We will schedule a one-hour appointment during a time that works best for you from 9 a.m. to noon.
What if I can’t make it on the date of the clinic?
We can try to accommodate another time, just let me know.
What if I have more questions after the consultation?
Iowa Legal Aid may be able to follow up to answer other questions after the consult.
What if I want to start another type of nonprofit organization, like a 501(c)(4)?
At this time, we are only advising on 501(c)(3) public charities. The Drake Transactional Legal Clinic may be able to help you.
How can I schedule my consultation?
Complete and submit the retainer (download above) to me AND sign up for a time to gather information and schedule your appointment here.
What if I have questions about the form or am not a U.S. citizen?
Reach out to me via email and we can discuss possible options.
Why can’t I schedule my appointment directly?
Iowa Legal Aid needs to screen clients to make sure they are eligible for our help and to make sure no conflicts prohibit us from advising you or your organization. You can sign up for a screening call/scheduling appointment with me using the link above.
