Job Title: Parent Advocate, Part-time
Job Location: Iowa Legal Aid, Waterloo, Dubuque and/or Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Position Summary: Parent Advocate will work collaboratively with Iowa Legal Aid attorney and case manager to assist parents who are involved in the child welfare system. The Parent Advocate will provide mentorship to parents in utilizing resources necessary to ensure safety of the family and children, and eliminate the need for continued involvement with the Department of Human Service by helping to identify barriers and needs of families and connecting parents with appropriate resources and ensuring follow through. This may also involve attending staffings, family team meetings, and other meetings as needed and assist clients in achieving goals. This will be a part-time position and it is anticipated that it will be between 5-10 hours per week.
Qualifications: Individual who has overcome obstacles and shown ability to utilize resources to successfully navigate the child welfare system. The Parent Advocate will work closely with attorneys and must have ability to maintain strict client confidentiality as well as the ability to work collaboratively with the attorney and case manager.
Applicants should also have some or all of the following:
- Knowledge of community resources.
- Experience working with persons in crisis.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to establish rapport.
- Ability to motivate others towards achieving goals.
- Ability and experience working independently.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle and provide own transportation.
